Phuket Island
Phuket province includes Thailand's largest island, covering 550 square kms. With a history stretching back at least one thousand years, Phuket was long known as a center of tin mining, its principal industry until 1980. 70% of the land area is mountainous and much of this is covered by rubber plantations. Tourism began booming in the 1980's, and today 3,000,000 visitors yearly enjoy the island's famous beaches, which line the west coast. National Parks cover more than 110 square kms. of northern Thalang District. |
